Care Boys and Care Girls

I discovered this weekend that the Care Bears have been revived in a sort-of annoying new animated series, Care Bears: Adventures in Care-A-Lot. It’s not just sort-of annoying because it’s made for people much younger than me and is so overwhelmingly nice, or that it’s been “modernized” and they changed Care-A-Lot into this awesome new city where the Care Bears use technology and apparently run businesses and hang out at coffee shops, completely ignoring their original job of helping out human kids in trouble.

What really got to me was the makeover they gave to my beloved Care Bears – instead of looking just like the stuffed teddy bears the show was created to sell, they’ve become a little humanized and incredibly gendered.

Some of the boys wear baseball caps, and all the girls have their “hair” done up in ponytails or bows. The purple one is carrying a purse! Since they no longer engage in people-saving adventures (you know the whole Caring thing), all the Care Bears do now is socialize and buy and sell candy, so being able to tell which ones are boys and which are girls is really important now?

Oh well, at least they don’t inexplicably have boobs (that’s supposed to be a reindeer).

Disclaimer: In spite of everything I just said, I am definitely going as this for Halloween.
