Well, It’s Funny to Me, At Least…
I have love-hate relationship with the advertisements placed all over my beloved public transportation fixtures. Sure, they help pay for the bus I ride everyday, and I’m always intrigued by the way that what appears to be Kate Walsh’s blown-up face on the outside of the bus appears only as a little screen over the window from the inside. But they can also be ugly and repetitive, and remind me how we’re wasting that space on advertising where we could otherwise be installing some art or something more representative of our culture, like you can see in all the awesome, individualized Red Line stations (unless garish ads are twenty-first-century art, a reflection of our ridiculous consumerism-based culture! I think that’s another post entirely).
But sometimes I find one to appreciate due to its sheer comedic value, such as this bus bench ad in West Hollywood, which reads: “Professional representation in your neighborhood for over 25 years!” … and you can tell he’s really been around that long, since he apparently hasn’t purchased a new cell phone anytime in that quarter-century.

You should listen to Run DMC on a giant boombox while sitting at that bus stop.
Or just write the “advertising as modern art” blog. Focus more on web-based ads and Flash to avoid immediate comparisons with Warhol.

He might as well be holding a tin can with a string tied to one end and pretend that’s a phone.
